I M ART presents Eva Eun-Sil Han's first solo exhibition in Korea,
from November 21 through December 30, 2008. Born in 1972, Eva Eun-Sil
Han mainly displays sensuous, fresh collage works in this exhibition.
After studying Spanish Literature and History of Art at Dankook
University, she went to Belgium to study art at L'Atelier d'Art
de la Grange des Champs. After her studies, she started her career
as an artist. Currently residing in Belgium, she took part in many
group shows and was first invited to Illustrative 08, held in Zurich,
Switzerland in October 2008, as a Korean artist.
Eva's work captures the viewer's attention with its combination
of idiosyncratic elements in one single space. Eerie yet beautiful,
her work recalls Dadaist and Surrealist artists in its use of
photomontages, dépaysement technique where objects are
placed in entirely unexpected spaces, and use of typography. As
Dadaist and Surrealist artists did, Eva has chosen collages for
a more liberal creation. These diverse techniques have enabled
her to represent feelings and images in her mind more freely than
before. Eva adds geometrical lines and figures to the cuttings
of photographs. They work as the medium bridging the isolated
self to the outside world and closing the gap between the reality
and the unreality.
The artist explains that the theme of her work is influenced by three elements forming one's psyche: the ego, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious, based on the Analytical Psychology of Carl Gustav Jung. While the ego consists of perception, memory, and thought, the personal unconscious is a reservoir of materials that would emerge in the sphere of the conscious with ease. On the contrary, unlike the personal unconscious, a reservoir of individual experiences, the collective unconscious is something evolved from the accumulation of collective memories and thoughts of humankind throughout many generations. Eva embarks on her work without conceiving any result in advance. Instead, she gradually completes her work, following the stream of consciousness, spontaneously occurring emotion and psychological reaction, resulting in an integrated operation of these three factors.
This exhibition brings together her collages and other drawings that have not been shown to the public, thereby offering a chance to appreciate her diverse art world. Her 30 artworks on display in the exhibition will provide viewers with an opportunity to experience her free-flowing imagination and ideas, transcending the limit of our reason in contemporary society that pursues something apparent and mechanical.
