DAIVD KORTY
04 23 - 05 30 2009

I M ART is pleased to present American painter David Korty's first solo exhibition in Korea. Living and working in L.A, Korty received his B.A. from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence and his M.A. from University of California, Los Angeles. He has had his solo show at Sadie Coles HQ, Michael Kohn Gallery and has participated in the several international group exhibitions around Europe and America.

David Korty is well-known for his sophisticated painting which deals with close observation of daily life in the urban environments. In the paintings, Korty effectively conveys bustled urban atmosphere and its excitement to the public despite the use of limited color and patterns. This vivid effect on the canvas is derived from his unique interpretation of time and light that he sensitively appreciates in his daily routine.

Applied diverse materials such as pencil, oil and watercolors on a canvas, Korty's recent works reveals powerful visual effect. He animated the noisy in the city as a visual sound on his painting. The warm atmosphere and vital energy is created by using the bold and bright color which will be regarded as a distinguished character from his works. In contrast, he depicted each person's face in grey color to prevent bringing into relief a person's individual character and incite the audience to empathy with every situation in his painting. Moreover, with using hazy and bright color palette and describing object's detail in humorous way, Korty's repeated features for instance, simplified images, geometric composition, flatness and architectural space division which could be read as a puzzling passage to the viewer lead the audience to stare at every single piece and offer visual amusement.

In this exhibition, David Korty will present twenty pieces of oil and watercolor paintings. These remarkable pieces which remind us of William Turner (1775-1851) and Georges Pierre Seurat (1859-1891) describe our experience in modern life feelingly but not seriously keeping a distance between familiar objects and his own visual signs. With the diverse imaginative narratives in his simplified urban daily life paintings, Korty suggests observing the daily life with the distinctive aspect and opens up the wide range of feelings in his painting to the public.
