I M ART is pleased to present an exhibition 'Turning Up #2', of works by Song Won Jin, Jang Lila, Soyoung Chung and Jung Jae Ho from the 11th of Sep. till the 17th of Oct. Differing from other exhibitions dealing with visual perception of object and space, 'Turning Up #2' offers new visual awareness and interpretation of the object recreated from approaching familiar subject matters and the space from diverse viewpoints. Considering how cultural influences have defined the general conception of object reflected through commonly used languages, behaviours and visual signs, they present us with questions on our thinking structure and the process of forming our notions.
Employing diverse methods and materials, the artists embody existing object and space in their own visual languages through a process of modification and deconstruction. Through repetitive process of transforming from temporal to permanent existence, from plane to solid form, these works explore the boundaries of object consisted of form and function and discuss their relational contradictions between object and space formed in a white cube, artificial but generally considered an ideal exhibition space.
Song Won Jin has been producing works visualizing sections of invisible relationships connected with numerous layers in time and space. Through meaningless actions repeating purposeless physical movements of collecting branches, winding them with threads and "placing them in form of a letter" or by "acts of interrupting communication" blocking parts of holes composed on a glass wall in the shape of an island which are made for conversation in visiting rooms, the artist shows helplessness of an individual in relation to the world and the time passing. Jang Lila questions the universality of cultural convention shaped in the diversified modern society. Creating objects that look like furniture but without its own functionality and filled with such unfamiliar elements, the artist exposes ironies of the definitions implied in the objects used in accordance with our common experience. Soyoung Chung continues works creating new time and space through diverse physical process of expansion, transformation and deconstruction of the existing spaces focusing on their features such as balance, harmony, structure, disruption and contrast. Taking a form of wall painting, Jung Jae Ho observes the spatial unfamiliarity created in the exhibition space with the works spreading into the wider space crossing over limited materialistic characteristics of the canvas.
Presented in the second and third floor exhibition spaces, works in 'Turning Up #2' will highlight the dichotomous relationships that exist in object and space. Through humorous and contradicting visuals, the exhibition will engage viewers to substitute their own experiences and memories in the systematic relationship between object and space and will suggest new visual understandings to experience their expanded emotional capacity.
